“You can use basketball as a vehicle to do a lot of things,” said Richie Schueler, founder of PhDHoops. “Basketball is a way to teach children maturity, accountability, teamwork, and working together in groups.”
Schueler holds a number of key professional tools to act as a former college basketball player, a 10-year college basketball coach, and a current basketball analyst at ESPN Family of Networks and Fox Sports.

PhD Hoops’ 3rd Annual Travel Skills Tour was held in Los Angeles from July 29th to August 4th as experienced coaches worked on skill development with young players and shed light on cultural education. rice field.
Prior to COVID, travel tour locations included the islands of Barbados in Europe and the Caribbean, where camps and coaching clinics were held.
“When we do these travel tours, it’s more than basketball,” Schuler added.
The group includes 30 players from more than 20 states and 10 who enjoyed a unique experience in the city, including visits to Manhattan Beach Pier, Venice Beach, and watching Drew League Basketball at other locations and events. One staff member participated.

Players ranged from 13 to 23 years old, and some players were able to participate in the High School Basketball All-American Showcase against other young talented competitions.
“This trip was great. I was able to meet new people all over the United States and learn about their background,” said PhD Hops travel participant Damariae Sawyer. “It was a really humble experience for me because I knew that some of these people grew up in a bad environment. That there are people here who are serious about getting out of a bad situation. I was able to understand. “
The coach led a three-hour skill session and was able to watch movies and tutorial videos before players arrived on the court to view their skills.
Players were selected through a number of player applications with limited roster locations, allowing detailed development of each player.
“The moment players perform one of the movements they have learned and it works, their facial expressions are amazing,” said PhDHoops skill coach Jerrod Gamble. “They feel and I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

“PhD Hoops had several coaches who could help give each player a different perspective,” Gamble added. “This supported our highly skilled players as well as those who are just getting started.”
A group of players enjoyed other excursions, including visiting Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Hollywood, and the LACMA Urban Lights.
“Travel was honestly the best part,” Sawyer said. “It’s a big difference to see it from the TV screen and reality.”

Towards the end of the tour, players continued to apply new skills to hardwoods and began to build relationships that could last a lifetime.
“It was a really fun experience,” said Kellan Rush, a travel participant at PhD Hoops. “I learned a lot of new drills and skills and made meaningful relationships with players and coaches from different backgrounds.”

“The coaches were great, they understood us as individuals,” Sawyer said. “They looked for us, made sure we had everything, and took care of us.”
The 2022 Los Angeles Skills Tour is already open for next summer with the aim of growing in all aspects of travel tours, skills development and coach clinics.
