TO THE EDITOR:
We read with dismay in the Manistee News Advocate the plan to erect an out of place hotel/motel in the First Street Beach area!
This would negatively impact the natural beauty of the area. We totally agree with previous letters to the editor listing the serious concerns of the proposed structure upon the infrastructure of the water, sewer, traffic, etc. This structure would be totally out of character for this area. This would also just be a gateway to future structures, such as a convenience store, gas station, etc. in the area.
Why not just update the existing motel that is already there? It blends in nicely with the area, including the exterior color. You would not notice that it is there at all, unless you are looking for it — nice low profile, and trees all around, which would all be destroyed with the proposed building of the Hampton Inn. Everything would be bulldozed to the bare sand to make way for the new structure and parking lot, etc.
We certainly don’t need any more motel/hotel rooms in the Manistee area. If one is thought to be needed, put it downtown or on U.S. 31. There are plenty of empty spots for one. Manistee’s River Street has many boarded up and unused empty stores and spaces that could be utilized.
Where are the protests from the people living in the immediate neighborhood? Do you want to see this forever? Once it has been built, there will be no going back. It will certainly decrease the valuation of those beautiful nearby homes and the lovely neighborhoods.
How foolish it would be to desecrate this beautiful area forever for a few extra dollars per year … totally not worth it.
Let’s preserve the natural beauty and attractiveness of the First Street Beach area forever; don’t let this bad idea become reality.
