By Benjamin Flowers: Travelers in airports across the United Kingdom today were met with frustration as all flights were cancelled.
The Independent reports that due to staff shortages at airlines due to illness and a surge in global travel demand, EasyJet and British Airways had to cancel hundreds of flights.
National World reports that British Airways cancelled 74 flights today, after cancelling 54 flights yesterday. Meanwhile, EasyJet cancelled 52 flights today, down by six from 58 cancellations yesterday.
Air travel throughout the UK has reportedly been plagued by security cues lasting upwards of an hour, flight relays and last-minute cancellations National World reports.
A spokesman for EasyJet stressed that the staff shortages are being caused by surges of COVID-19 infections throughout Europe.
The airline said it has been doing what it can to limit the effect that the cancellations have on passengers, and assured that the cancellations represent only “a small portion” of the 1,645 flights that have been planned for next Monday.
