3 Hudson Valley hotels ranked among best new hotels in the world

When global travel largely came to a halt in the pandemic, many of us explored our own region for places to stay and things to do. Turns out that’s the place to be after all.

Three new hotels in the Hudson Valley and Catskills regions earned spots among the 100 best new hotels worldwide, an annual “It List” compiled by editors at Travel + Leisure magazine.

Three other hotels in New York — located in New York City and the Hamptons — made the cut, giving our region heavy presence among the Empire State’s showing on the best-in-class lodging list.

All three Hudson Valley hotels are upscale stays located on the west side of the Hudson River and are in, or near, the Catskills.

Salt Hotel’s luxury cabins at Hutton Brickyards (200 North St., Kingston), located along the Hudson riverfront, made the list of 100 best new hotels. Editors recognized the venue for its preservation of the unique character of the historic brickyards — keeping details like half-sunken barges and the remains of an old kiln — while delivering elevated service, from in-cabin breakfast to “thirsty” flags for guests to summon a cocktail cart.

Another new hotel making the T+L list was Inness (10 Banks St, Accord), a bucolic property and members club located 90 miles from New York City and just south of the Catskill Mountains. The 220-acre resort’s Scandinavia-meets-farmhouse design is reflected in blond wood and clean lines in Inness’ 28 spare but rustic cabins. Editors praised the property’s vast landscape as well as its excellent dining and leave-the-world-behind relaxing pace.

Piaule Catskill (333 Mossy Hill Rd, Catskill), an eco-friendly boutique hotel nestled in 50 forested acres in the Catskills, opened in July 2021. Its 24 modern, wood-and-glass cabins earned high marks for their distinctive Japanese-Scandinavian aesthetic, as did Piaule’s spa services, which include sound baths, temperature-regulated pools that can be used year-round, a cedar sauna, yoga and massages.

Other New York hotels on the T+L list include Pendry Manhattan West, the first New York City outpost of California-based Pendry Hotels; Ace Hotel Brooklyn, located at the edge of Brooklyn Heights and Boerum Hill on the East River; and Marram Montauk, an oceanfront resort on the tip of Long Island in the Hamptons.

Hotels in 35 countries appear on the top-100 list. North American hotels snagged 42 spots, with the U.S. leading the charge with 35 listings, followed by Mexico (4), Canada (2) and Costa Rica (1).

New York’s six hotels to make the T+L rankings placed the state second in the U.S. to California’s seven hotels.
